SCALLOP SEASON IS OPEN

Hernando County is definitely open for recreational saltwater fishing. Considered to be the sport of choice in Florida , fishing continues to be a popular way to unwind or bond with friends and family. The “fishing capital of the world,” as declared by Gov. Charlie Crist, allows Florida residents, and non-residents alike, to take advantage of all that the Sunshine State ’s waters have to offer.

Spend time with Dad and loved ones this Father’s Day weekend by catching saltwater fish along Hernando County ’s natural coastline during another free fishing weekend. In addition to this weekend, starting July 1, Florida residents will qualify for a no-cost shoreline fishing license.

Scallop season opens early this year. Typically opening on July 1, this year scallop season opens June 19 and will run through its usual end date of Sept. 10, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

 Grab your snorkel, diving mask, fins and a mesh bag and head to the flats for your scalloping adventure.  The trick is finding them in the lush grass off inshore flats.  In Hernando County scalloping flats locations are southwest of the Chassahowitzka and west and north of the Weeki Wachee River .
